Antique Dragonfly Necklace
18ct Gold French Stamped
Circa 1870
A museum-worthy, breathtaking showstopper from the mid-to-late Victorian era. Dating to circa 1870, this monumental dragonfly pendant is an extraordinary celebration of 19th-century naturalist jewellery, French goldsmithing, and exquisite gemstone craftsmanship.
Handcrafted in traditional period technique with a solid 18ct yellow gold undercarriage and a silver-topped front, the silver setting provides an authentic, moody contrast that makes each antique gemstone ignite with color and fire.
The dragonfly is encrusted throughout with natural precious gemstones:
Body & Tail: An articulated, sinuous tail lined with bright antique rose-cut diamonds, curling with lifelike anatomical grace.
Thorax: Centered with a vibrant, glowing oval pinkish-red ruby in a collet bezel.
Head: Piercing green natural emerald cabochon eyes topped with delicate diamond-set antennae and ruby accent terminals.
Wings: Openwork wings pavé-set with shimmering rose-cut diamonds, vividly accented with alternating natural rubies and rich blue sapphires.
Suspended gracefully from both wingtips, the pendant hangs from a solid antique 15ct yellow gold rope-twist chain, allowing the piece to sit flat and drape dramatically against the collarbone.
The total length of the necklace measures 17 1/2 inches and the chain 1.6mm. The pendant measures approximately 48.5mm in height and 75mm in width.
All of our items are either Antique, Vintage or Preloved. They are in used condition and may show some signs of age-related wear, light surface scratches or tarnish.
